But it was after Ginger and Pickles came out that Beatrix wrote to the owner of the real, distinctively coloured ‘Ginger’, in a rare expression of dissatisfaction with the animal world she portrayed: ‘it is an unfortunate fact that animals in their own natural pretty fur coats don’t sell so well as dressed – and one has to consider the bills at this time of year’.
